Selected breeding: a commitment to the health and beauty of your Shiba Inu

Selected breeding is a rigorous program of the Italian Kennel CLub ENCI to improve the health, morphological and character traits of breeding dogs. To obtain the “Selected Breeder” certificate, your Shiba’s parents had to pass a series of tests:

  • Morphological tests:

In a Special or Club Show, the dog must obtain at least a "Very Good" rating.

  • Character Evaluation Test:

This test, from the 15th month of age, evaluates the character of the subject to ensure its suitability for breeding.

  • Health tests:

The dog must be free from Hip Dysplasia (with official veterinary certification, grade A or B) and Hereditary Eye Diseases.

  • Deposit of biological sample:

The dog must deposit its biological sample at an ENCI accredited laboratory for future kinship checks.

Advantages of selective breeding:

  • Improved health: Puppies born from selected breeders offer greater guarantees against genetic diseases.
  • Better Character: Puppies come from parents with a balanced temperament and will be more suitable for family life.
  • Improved morphology: Puppies are beautiful to look at, elegant, harmonious and in type with the breed.

The “Selected Breeder” qualification is also transcribed on the pedigree, and as a further distinction, the offspring of selected breeders will have a special red pedigree and the words “Selected Reproduction” on the cover. To verify if a dog is registered in this program, you can access the “online pedigree” section on the ENCI website. Once you have entered the data of the dog you are interested in, the search mask will display the dog’s card and you can check the presence of the aforementioned title under the “anagrafica” heading. However, for us, it is not enough that our dogs are Selected Breeders. Before they can be mated, they must have obtained at least one Championship in adult category (over 15 months old), because in addition to being healthy, we also want our puppies to be unquestionably beautiful!
